Very few children say I want to be a doctor when I grow up without a little parental influence. What did you really want to be when you were a child? Does this require a college degree?

The next step is to look outside of yourself and search for examples of people that you can use to make your decision. Who do you know that went to college? Who do you know that didn’t go? How did their lives turn out? Are they struggling to pay off student loans, or are did they make a success for themselves? Did their success or failure come naturally, or did going to college play a part in what they now know as life? While it’s true that your results will vary from theirs, you can get an idea of what to expect if you can find a person similar to yourself in ability and drive.

The next thing you need to do is to find out whether you are going to college because you really really want to or because you are scared of what will happen if you don’t go to college. If you are basing your decision of going to university out of fear of unemployment, guess what, you’ll still be unemployed after you graduate. You have to go to college because you want to go, you have to have a strong desire to go or you won’t be able to see it through. Excitement fades, and around sophomore year many students drop out. Being a college drop out can be much more detrimental to your finances and future than not going at all.

If you are lukewarm at the thought of going to college, DON’T GO! Why do something just because society thinks you should if you’ll just be miserable while you’re there? Being on the fence about it before enrolling leads to being miserable while you’re there. You definitely don’t want to set yourself up for paying student loans after you graduate four miserable years later and end up in a job you’re miserable at, in a house you resent and a car that’s economical. Follow your passion and make your own path.
